Norfolk Southern could face weeks of service problems after a technology outage disrupted the railroad’s operations Monday.
Though trains were operational by Monday evening, “we expect the impact to our operations to last at least a couple of weeks,” Norfolk Southern said in a statement.
Norfolk Southern is still investigating what caused the problem, spokesperson Conner Spielmaker, said in an email to Supply Chain Dive Tuesday, but the railroad noted there is no indication it was a cybersecurity incident.
Norfolk Southern said it has contacted customers to keep them apprised of the movement of their shipments. The railroad operates more than 19,000 miles of track across 22 states, covering the East Coast, Northeast, Southeast and parts of the South and Midwest.
A number of agriculture products are transported via Norfolk Southern, including corn, wheat, soybeans, sweeteners, oils and animal feed.
